BPI's FY25 Budget Season Work
2024 was the first time that BPI followed Boston City Hall’s formal budget process:
Mayor released of her budget proposal on the second Wednesday in April - April 10, 2024;
6 weeks of budget hearings in April and May; then
4 weeks of fighting over less than 1% of the FY25 budget as the Council made budget changes in early June, the Mayor vetoed them in mid-June, and the late June passage of the FY25 budget.
BPI followed the budget process with a “Prepare for” email every Monday laying out:
Which departments and offices are appearing at each hearing;
Where to find each hearing’s focus in the 1,194 page budget book;
The FY25 vs FY24 numbers from the budget book for that hearing;
Highlight which spending priorities laid out in the Mayor’s budget letter are for that hearing’s topic; and
What BPI is watching for in each hearing.
For 2025, that budget letter is out, and BPI wrote up an analysis of it that you can find here.
In 2024 there were 10 weeks of the budget- find each “Prepare for” posts, plus the Weekly Transcript Round-Ups for each week - below:
